Keep Face Makeup in Place
Foundation, Concealer & Eyeshadow Primer
The best place to start with “sweat proofing” your makeup is in what goes under your makeup. After you’ve applied a moisturizer with SPF in it, think about using primers.
I personally love the Benefit Porefessional to go underneath my foundation or BB cream as a face primer. You can even wear it by itself to perfect skin! Face primers are great for keeping makeup in place, staying matte, and minimizing the appearance of pores. Simply apply towards the center of your face and blend outwards, focusing on your most oily areas (usually the T-zone). I recommend a face primer for all types of makeup looks, even no makeup.
If you’re going for a more dramatic look, with full makeup – you should use a concealer and eyeshadow primer to keep your makeup in place. Some primer formulas can serve both purposes. Another personal favorite of mine that acts as both an eyeshadow and concealer primer for all over the eye area is the Benefit Stay Don’t Stray. You can dot this neutral, flesh colored formula underneath your eyes and on your eyelids. This will help both your eyeshadow and concealer stay put.
Creams, Creams, Creams!
Eyeshadows, Blushes, Bronzers & More
Consider what the actual formula of your makeup is made up of. I love using powder formulas in my daily makeup routine, but sometimes creams can work better for the summer time. Cream eyeshadows, blushes, bronzers, liners, and lip products are more waterproof.
You’ll want to be careful how many creams you’re using on your face, as you can easy over do it with these formulas. They tend to be more vibrant and long lasting on the face, so choose wisely. Pick just one or two areas to focus on: lips, cheeks, or eyes.
A personal favorite to use when I want to waterproof my eye makeup are the Maybelline Color Tattoos. These products even promise to stay in place for up 24 hours! I’m not sure they last that long, but they are fabulous and come in a variety of shades!
The Laura Mercier Flawless Contouring palette features stunning cream formulas for contouring, hi-lighting, and bronzing. The NYX Rouge Cream Blushes are a good option for those new to use cream blush. With both of these formulas I like to apply with a precision brush and blend stippling brush or beauty blender. The blush can also just be blended with fingertips, but stick to tools to help with contouring.
Set Your Makeup
The Most Forgotten Step in Sweat Proofing Your Makeup
With using these cream makeup formulas, it’s more important than ever to set your makeup so that your face doesn’t look like your backyard slip ‘n slide! I like to set my cream bronzers and blushes with a pit of powder formula as well.
I also like to use a matifying powder to set my makeup. The Rimmel Stay Matte powder is my all-time favorite, affordable and effective. Another great option is the e.l.f. Studio High Definition Powder which creates a flawless effect on your skin. It’s not the best for waterproofing your makeup, but is great for those humid, hot times of year. I would even use both those products together to ensure a sweat proof look!
However, for the hottest situations – I stick with a setting spray. My favorite is the Urban Decay De-Slick Oil-Control Setting Spray. This is the best type of product you can use to control shine and keep your makeup in place. It’s perfect for the summer when we tend to find ourselves in more “sweaty” situations. 🙂
