Every few months, the city of Los Angeles transforms into a cycling paradise. Today was one of those days. I participated in my 2nd CicLAvia today on the Iconic Wilshire Blvd, which went from Miracle Mile through Korea town and into Downtown LA. The route today was 6 miles, which is about the usual length. Anyone can participate, you just hop on your bike (or rent one) and join the herd the cyclists. I was surprised how many bike shops there were to rent from in the area as well, so don’t let not having a bike stop you.
“CicLAvia catalyzes vibrant public spaces, active transportation and good health through car-free street events. CicLAvia engages with people to positively transform our relationship with our communities and with each other.” –CicLAvia
The event usually lasts several hours, today is was 9 am to 4 pm. There is no stopping or starting point and you can ride for as long or little as you like. Along the route there are several vendor booths, food trucks, bike repair tents, first aid stops, water fountains, and merchandise tents. Overall, it’s an awesome way to get outside and have some healthy fun.
The next CicLAvia is the “Heart of LA” on 10/5/14 followed by “South LA” on 12/7/14. Today really inspired me to invest in a better bike as I currently just use a hand-me-down beach cruiser. You might (hopefully) see my new set of wheels sooner rather than later! 😉
This looks like so much fun! I live right above a bike shop and have been so tempted to get one..now I definitely want to. It was nice meeting you this weekend too and we’ll definitely have to keep in touch xx
